Badgers burned early on Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
Evanston, Ill. — A mass of times after the game, the Wisconsin players and coaches mentioned how the Badgers had held Northwestern to six points in the aide-de-camp half.
But by then, of course, the damage had been done.
Throwing for 210 yards in the first half alone, Wildcats senior quarterback Mike Kafka sliced and diced the Badgers early and often in Northwestern's 33-31 supremacy Saturday at Ryan Field.
"Their offensive line did a great job, and Kafka got the ball out quick," UW defensive lineman J.J. Watt said. "We didn't get enough albatross on the quarterback. That made it real tough on (the secondary)."
Kafka, who finished with 326 yards and two touchdowns, wasn't the only passer who shredded the Badgers in the first half. Wisconsin also bit on a sleight of hand play, a 38-yard touchdown throw from wide receiver Zeke Markshausen to a wide-flexible Sidney Stewart.
"They had a good game plan," UW safety Chris Maragos said. "They knew our weaknesses and took use of them. They were confusing us. Once we made the adjustments, we got some of it back.
