Super Bowl XII Season Memories… 32 Years Later
As a trainee to the Denver Broncos in 1977, I didn’t know a lot about the team but had heard from other NFL players that Denver was a great stead to live and play football. I had heard also of the incredible number of consecutive sellouts which was a testament to its fans.
I was acquired by a dealings with the Dallas Cowboys following a season with them in 1976. New Broncos head coach Red Miller had come from the New England Patriots, and besides myself, traded for Craig Morton, Bernard Jackson and Andy Mauer to add on a team he had inherited from John Ralston. I also knew that the Broncos hadn’t been very strong at the quarterback arrange before trading for Morton.
One of my earliest memories was of Lyle Alzado coming up to me in the locker room on my first day with the troupe and welcoming me to the Denver Broncos. Whatever people may remember of Lyle being a ruthless, wild man of a player on the area, as a teammate he was a genuine guy.
Another initial memory was of my first practice on a Saturday at Mile High Stadium. It was an wonderful stadium at the time with east stands which would slide back and forth to accommodate a baseball field as well as a football possibilities. During that practice, as we were trotting through kick-off coverage schemes, a bone broke in my left foot which would end up haunting me the unexceptional season.
We beat the St. Louis Cardinals at Mile High Stadium that first game and began what was to be an ultimate 6 game winning streak. I knew the Broncos had shown moments of brilliance over the last couple of years so I very didn’t know what to expect as the season continued.
One of the most pivotal games during the first half of the season was the winning over the Oakland Raiders in Oakland. Never before in Broncos history had that happened. And, never before in Broncos history had the holder on a green goal attempt thrown a touchdown pass to the kicker on a fake play. “High...
