As the pry into continues for Warren Buffett’s potential successor, it’s worth taking a look at the “mini-Berkshire,” Markel Corp.

Some similarities between Markel and Berkshire:

- Markel also tries to sidestep splitting its stock (Berkshire has never split its A shares). MKL trades for around $328.

- Markel’s primary business is insurance.

- Markel does make money on its security business but a big source of cash is from its investment business.

First, an explanation. There’s a big reason Warren Buffett gave up his hedge assets business in 1969 in order to focus on the insurance business of Berkshire Hathaway. Think of it this way: a hedge green manager makes money by taking 20% of the profits on the money he invests for his clients. An insurance business is almost the same model with two shallow differences:

- an insurance company takes 100% of the profits on the money they invest

- the customers of an insurance company never be to get their money back (as opposed to a hedge fund where ultimately you have to return the money to your investors). People hand their money over every month and pray they never get nauseated enough to warrant getting that money back. The insurance company gets to hold onto the money as long as possible and take all the profits it makes by investing that money.

I exactly started driving for the company, the independent contractor thing. Most days I just break even more or less. I'm in a medium sized West Beach town.
A few experience cabbies have told me that you can make decent money driving a cab. If any one out there can give me any tips on how to do that, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks.
