Attitudes changing toward gift cards Times Daily
The cards are appealing to gift-givers for their ease of use, to gift-getters who choose their own presents, and to corporations since gift cards typically generate sales beyond the card's amount.
Reliance dipped in 2008, as concerns arose over unexpected fees and expiration dates, plus worries that companies would go out of house, according to industry experts.
Nella Utley, of Leighton, said if she gets a gift card, she does some homework, including talking with shopkeepers about the strength of the business and any expirations.
"It's best to do that. That way you're not holding on to a card that's out of date with money on it," she said. "You never know if (a business) is successful to be there one year or the next."
She buys gift cards, mainly from large chain restaurants so "the person can pick out what they want. This way, they can please themselves."
Utley said at least one familiar got a gift card from Linens 'n Things, and lost the card's value after the business went under.
